Paul

Persuasion:

Atheist

This conversation is with Paul, a man of English origin. His views are typical of the post-modern thinking in England, making this a great example of the wisdom and prudence of men being blind to the things of God. You'll notice he is very inconsistent in his logic, thinking that there is absolute truth, such as truth in mathematics, yet there is no absolute truth in moral or spiritual areas of life. He believes religions are personal and every person has their own way of expressing them. The concepts of creation, sin, judgment, are all nonsense to him, as expected in a state of hardness and pride. He had no desire to even look into the compelling claims of Christ, openly welcoming the gamble of eternal life in hell. Chris and Chad pleaded with him to humble himself, otherwise he would continue to be blinded and indifferent to the things of God. After 17 minutes of persuasion and reasoning, they finally wiped the dust off their feet, sending the seed of the Gospel to be watered elsewhere.

Unbeliever:

"Biggie"

Persuasion:

?

“Biggie” was sitting in the gazebo when Bob and Chris approached him. He was a very quiet man (listen closely when he speaks) and a pretty broken one. He stated that he was saddened over recently losing his relationship with his son due to his son’s drug habit. He, unlike the vast majority of people, seemed to understand that God is vengeful and punishes sin. He expressed that he believes heaven is a “lonely place”. What he needed to understand is that sin is forgivable through the shed blood of Jesus Christ and that, through the new birth, people can be changed forever from being slaves of sin to living for God’s glory. And that is exactly what Chris and Bob shared with him!

Mario

Persuasion:

Catholic

When Bob and Chris approached Mario, he had just stepped out of his car and was ready to walk down the street. Mario was a nice guy and very easy to talk to. Chris began by asking him some simple open-ended questions about his spiritual beliefs then quickly transitioned to walking him through the ten commandments and allowing God to work conviction in his heart through the Law. Mario realized that he was on his way to hell and expressed that he was concerned about that fact. After Chris laid out the gospel, though, Mario demonstrated that he did not fully understand what he was told when he said that religions are all different means to the same end. Chris shared with him that Jesus Chris is the one and only way to heaven and, gave him a tract and a gospel of John and urged him to consider his salvation.

Brendan

Persuasion:

Neo-pagan priest

Brendan was sitting on a park bench reading a book and eating lunch when Chad and Chris approached him. Chad told him that they were interviewing people about their spiritual beliefs and quickly found out that Brendan has been a neo-pagan priest for the past 13 years. Chad spent a lot of time attempting to understand his beliefs without using specific evangelism approach.Brendan was very intellectual and very universalistic. He had a lot of head knowledge but was far from the truth of the Scriptures. In fact, he believed that the truth is unknowable (if that’s true, then how could he know?), so we had to take time to establish the fact that absolute truth exists. After giving many proofs for the veracity of Scripture, Chad explained that unbelief is, in reality, a moral issue and, at the end of the day, people have no excuse for not placing their faith in Christ. He was nice and listened but was not convicted of his sin. Pray that God would show him the futility of his thinking and his desperate need for Jesus Christ.

Joe

Persuasion:

Catholic

Joe was sitting on a wall just passing the time. When Chris and Chad approached him, he was not interested in talking about spiritual things. However, after mentioning that he went to Catholic school, Chris was able to ask him how many of the 10 commandments he could name…which lead right into a 25-minute conversation.Joe seemed to want to bounce around from idea to idea, so Chris did not follow any specific evangelism approach, but took every opportunity to share and explain the five essential/foundational elements of the gospel (God’s holiness, man’s sinfulness, the person and work of Christ, grace, and repentant faith) in every way he knew how. Chris and Chad explained the gospel thoroughly and completely in numerous ways with examples, illustrations, verses, commands, warnings, etc. After all of it, Joe said something that revealed that he still had a veil over his eyes. Chris left him with a tract and his phone number. Pray that God would remove the veil from Joe’s eyes so he can believe the truth and be saved.

Ashley

Persuasion:

Catholic

Chad approached Ashley as she was walking to the Mac machine. He followed the “Way of the Master” (Mark 10:17ff – Rich young ruler) approach, leading her through the 10 commandments to recognize her sin then sharing the good news of Christ with her.Ashley was very receptive and seemingly very humble, which made for a “text book” witnessing encounter. Notice how Chad corrects her misconception that being born again is synonymous with having and emotional experience and tells her that she needs to repent. Ashley agreed that she needs to surrender her life to Jesus Christ but was a little nervous about praying with Chad and Chris. They got her phone number for follow-up but she gave them the wrong number. Pray that she truly repents and believes in Christ.

Mike

Persuasion:

Catholic

Mike was a college student who was riding his bike to get a haircut. Chris used a modified version of the “Share Jesus without Fear” approach and utilized the Gideon tract called “Facts to Face” as a reference point through the witnessing encounter. Mike had a postmodern mentality that embraced salvation for any religious group as long as the person was “remorseful” and “good”. Although he listened, Mike did not understand or agree with the gospel message. After then finished recording, Chris was able to review the gospel one more time and warn him about the importance of giving his life to Christ and the consequences of not doing so. Pray that God would soften his heart.
